The work of the Schwartz Center for Children began in 1947 with a group of parents, led by Agnes "Posa" Raposa.
Her youngest child, a son, was born with cerebral palsy. Since there were no local services available, she created them. Imagine the drive and foresight she had in establishing a pediatric therapeutic treatment center, the Cerebral Palsy Council of Bristol County, in 1947. Her mission to help each child "achieve their greatest potential, " was one to which she dedicated her life.
In response to the children's needs, the Council soon added therapy, a summer day camp, and a program for young children. As the reputation of these services spread, parents sought care for children with a variety of disabilities.
In 1951, Dr. Isaac H. Schwartz was appointed medical director at the Schwartz Center for Children and played a key role in getting basic medical services for these children through a clinic at St. Luke's Hospital.
As a pediatrician in this area for almost 25 years and as founding medical director of the Schwartz Center for Children, he left a lasting impression on those whose lives he touched. Through his work at the Center, he shaped the programs and philosophy for treating children with disabilities which continue today. That is why a few months after his death on March 20, 1970, the Cerebral Palsy Clinic was renamed in his honor.
Today, the Council operates the Schwartz Center for Children, Southeastern Massachusetts' only independent, community-based provider of therapy, education, developmental, and social services for children.
In addition, the Center also plays a leadership role in training and providing technical assistance to health care professionals, schools, and families throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.
The Schwartz Center for Children's beloved founder and long-time Executive Director, Agnes E. "Posa" Raposa passed away on January 23, 2002 at the age of 86.
Continuing Posa's legacy is paramount to the mission of the Center today. As such, the Schwartz Center for Children continues to be a beacon of hope, inspiration, and comfort for thousands of children and their families throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.
As a result, the Center has established the Agnes E. Raposa Memorial Society. Membership in the society will enable us to ensure that the future of Posa's mission will be continued in perpetuity. The Society is a monthly sustainer program.
